When does a hobby become an addiction?

Acoustics — I am going to start this section off with a disclaimer.  I am not a professional.  I do not have any measuring equipment other than a SPL Meter from Radio Shack.  But what I do have is a room that has a very smooth response and is pleasant to watch a movie in.  I can credit the response and dialog clarity to my sound treatments.

Just after I thought I was finished with my theater I started reading about acoustic treatments.  People kept saying it was the most "bang for the buck" tweak you can do to your room.  Of course that was all I needed to hear and started making plans in my little brain.

DIY or Commercial? — Considering that just the consulting fee to come into my home was more money than my projector cost.  I decided to go with the DIY approach.  If you have the money to burn there are more than a few places that will set you up.

How did I do it?— The hardest part about doing your acoustic panels or treatment is finding the damn insulation.  The most common choices are Owens Corning 703 or 705 compressed fiberglass or JM Linacoustic roll.  I got lucky and found an enthusiast in Evansville WI who had some extra JM Linacoustic so I snatched that stuff up.  To install it I -

  1. Made some frames out of furring strips about the same size as the insulation.
  2. Then wrapped the frames in fire retardant burlap.
  3. Stapled the insulation to the walls.
  4. Covered the insulation with the skinned frames.
  5. Secured the frames to the wall.
  6. I have acoustic panels going around the room at 20" off the ground.  This is a good height as it lines up with the viewer's ears on both seating positions.
